CAGE Confrontation Seven – the seventh mixed martial arts show to be staged in York – has been given a triple-strength boost.

The show, which again is under the United Masters Promotions banner of Tony Dias and Gaz Watkinson, will take place at York’s Energise Centre in Acomb a week from today – Saturday, November 24.

As a flurry of contests across the range of mixed martial arts disciplines have been finalised, the sport has been boosted by no fewer than three York warriors returning from Holland with world titles.

Dias, the co-promoter of the show who also runs the United Masters Academy in Redeness Street in York’s Layerthorpe with Watkinson, won his third world title at the ISKA kick-boxing championships in the Dutch resort of Valkenburg.

There were debut world titles for Stu Phillips and Martin Baulkalns.

Said Dias: “In preparation for the world championships we had lots of support and assistance at the United Masters gym and also the Legions gym run by Dave Phillips.

“It was absolutely brilliant after 12 weeks of hard training and preparing to come away with three world gold medals. Now we are looking forward to Cage Confrontation Seven.”

Dias, who won his crown to follow on from successes in 2009 and 2010, actually defied a smashed bone in his left wrist to become a third-time world champion.

But while delighted at his triple achievement, he was thrilled by the successes of fellow United Masters devotees Phillips, who won the minus 75-kilogram full contact kick boxing world title and Baulkalns, who lifted the minus 63.5k mixed martial arts crown, well as taking silver in the kick-boxing discipline.

Dias said Baulkalns will now be among a welter of York exponents competing for seven titles at Cage Confrontation Seven, which opens its doors to the public at the Energise Centre next Saturday from 5pm.

“Adam Wright from York United Masters Academy will also be fighting for a British title at cage Confrontation Seven and three Legions Club fighters – Liam Brough, Liam Gordon and Thomas Reynard will also be on the bill,” said Dias.
