Super Selby slaughter RI

SIX-TRY Shaun Austerfield led Yorkshire Two leaders Selby RUFC to their biggest victory since the start of league rugby union in 1987.

They humiliated injury-ravaged York RI 82-0 at Sandhill Lane - a result which leaves the Railwaymen anchored firmly at the foot of the table having lost all six of their games.

Although the absence of three key players meant major reorganisation for RI, Selby were just too good.

RI competed well in the forwards, despite being smaller and lighter, with youngsters Danny Hunt and Chris Lynch standing up well to senior rugby while Paul Reed and Garrett Mallon carried the ball well.

But it was Selby all the way from the first minute when they won a lineout and swept the ball out for winger Sam Weller to touchdown.

Five minutes later an RI clearance kick went straight to second row forward Jason Cicero who went in from 20 yards.

Austerfield and flanker Richard Nicholson combined well to put Cicero in for his second try.

On 20 minutes the ball broke loose after a fine run by Selby full-back Rich Topping and Austerfield kicking through to get the touch down.

Cicero completed his hat trick when he took a Wright Phillips pass and the carnage continued as winger Rob Arnold put Austerfield in for his second try.

Selby were leading 36-0 when stalwart Tony Godfrey came on for his prop debut for the first team at the expense of Mark Tomlinson.

RI, who played with great spirit throughout, had their first period pf pressure about the half-hour mark but Selby broke out from defence with Phillips setting up Austerfield for his hat-trick.

RI turned round 43-0 down and had the better of things early in the second half but were unable to cope with the speed and handling of the Selby backs with Austerfield scoring again on 49 minutes.

Austerfield turned provider to put in Topping, then a superb break by the improving Dan Porter created Austerfield's fifth try. Porter scored a try of his own and two minutes later a Rob Arnold break enabled Topping to cross.

Austerfield crossed for his sixth try - and his 16th of the season - and the carnage was completed near the end with a touchdown for flanker Richard Nicholson. Porter added the conversion, his sixth successful kick of the day.
