Match preview: York City v AFC Wimbledon
11:23am Friday 9th November 2012 in Sport
By Dave Flett, Sports reporter
AFC WIMBLEDON boss Neil Ardley is once more expected to reshuffle his pack when his team face York City at Bootham Crescent tomorrow.
Ardley has made five changes to his starting line-up for the last two games, opting for a rotation policy due to a punishing schedule at the start of November.
The Dons will arrive at Bootham Crescent having covered a thousand miles during the last week with their trips to North Yorkshire on consecutive weekends sandwiching a midweek clash in Exeter.
That 2-0 defeat was described by Ardley as the worst performance during his first month in charge, providing more reason for the former Wombles midfielder to weigh up his selection options again.
Wimbledon could only name six substitutes in midweek after Charlie Strutton, their FA Cup marksman at Bootham Crescent three days earlier, was struck down by a virus.
He is expected to return to the squad but Ardley will continue to be without crocked trio Sammy Moore (fractured leg), Mat Michel King (back) and Pim Balkestein (knee).
On-loan recruits Jonathan Meades and Jake Reeves, who have arrived from Bournemouth and Brentford respectively, came in for their debuts at Exeter and are expected to retain their places.
Meades was preferred at left-back to Warren Cummings in Devon while Reeves replaced Louis Harris in midfield.
Up to six players will be contesting the three midfield places alongside Reeves with the likes of George Francomb, Jim Fenlon, Rashid Yussuf, Steven Gregory, Stacy Long and Luke Moore all struggling to nail down a regular slot in the team.
In attack, Jack Midson is under pressure from Christian Jolley having failed to net in his last 11 games but leading six-goal marksman Byron Harrison is expected to keep his place despite failing to make the scoresheet in four appearances.
At the other end of the pitch, Wimbledon have League Two’s worst defensive record, shipping 31 goals, including 20 on their travels, which is four more than any other side in the division.
Following a run of one win from their last six matches — a 3-1 home win over Bristol Rovers – Ardley’s men also currently lie fourth-bottom just one point above improving basement boys Barnet.
Wimbledon (possible): Brown, Osano, Antwi, Mambo, Meades, Yussuf, Long, L Moore, Francomb, Harrison, Jolley.
Match facts
AFC Wimbledon lost on both of their Blue Square Premier visits to Bootham Crescent.
In April 2010, City won 5-0 with Richard Brodie hitting a hat-trick and Michael Rankine bagging a brace of goals.
On February 1, 2011, Rankine was again on target in a 4-1 win along with Danny Parslow, James Meredith and Ashley Chambers, and the line-up watched by 2,438 was: Ingham, Darville, Parslow, C Smith, Meredith, Mackin (Carruthers), Kerr, J Smith, Chambers (Reed), Rankine (Constantine), Till. Making their debuts were Liam Darville and Scott Kerr.
The original Wimbledon club were unbeaten in their four Football League trips to York, all in the Fourth Division (1978 to 1982), winning three times and drawing once.
It happened on November 10
1934: Maurice Dando hit a hat-trick in a 5-0 win over Rotherham United in Division Three North. Jack Eyres and George Bowater were the other scorers watched by 3,992.
1973: Chris Jones was the marksman in a 1-0 home win over Southend United in Division Three (League One) watched by 8,153. It was City’s 13th League game without defeat and their eighth successive clean sheet.
1998: City lost 2-0 at home to Macclesfield Town in front of 2,713 in the Second Division (League One). It was the seventh game without a win.

These poor home performances can't last forever. 2-0 to City, Chambers brace. 3500 (210)

That said, Wimbledon (I thought) were very poor when they last came to visit, and were pretty lucky to get the draw even if it was our own fault for not finishing them off. If we're firing on all cylinders we'll win comfortably. If not... 1-1 is more likely again.

5-0 to York, Blair to bag a hat-trick. As Scott Kerr said a few weeks ago, someone is gonna get a thrashing!
We're due a big win and we've been unlucky not to win the last 2 games (even though certain players, one in particular, should have taken their chances).

What`s the chances of 7 tomorrow?Hate to be negative but I reckon 0 - 0.Blair in midfield a big mistake in my opinion.
I would have rested Kerr and Walker for Monday and brought in Potts and Reed with the new man on the bench to start with.

Not one poster has predicted a defeat & I think anyone who's been to the home games knows we should have done better in many of them when we
have been in good positions & let things
slip-maybe we just want the best for our
Club-but I don't see any real negativity-
opinion maybe-whats wrong with that!

2-0 to city with the goals from Walker and Chambers. Having predicted the last two games correctly I'm looking for that hat trick.

However, I am hopeful for tomorrow as I believe Rodman may provide a much needed physical presence up front. So I am going 3-0 to City with Rodman, Chambers and Kearns finding the net. 3,010 including 100 Wombles. COME ON CITY

The tide is about to turn, Bootham Crescent will become a fortress. The Grinder still likes to be a bit cautious, so 1-0 to city with a Jason Walker penalty. Any type of win will do! Crowd, 3013

sixtyfourfive wrote:Good point sixtyfourfive - it was a great cross from Jason and a good pass to him from Jamal Fyfield in the build-up! Having said that, like most City fans that day during the second period of extra-time, I couldn't understand why he didn't pass to the unmarked and well placed Adriano Moke instead of trying that weak chip that was easily cleared and if we had scored, that would have finished the game off! Then, how he didn't score straight afterwards, when Moke returned the compliment he never got, when he twice missed with a one to one with the Mansfield keeper Marriott scrambling about on the ground, only he will know!! Good job it didn't cost us - they did have one good opportunity to score just after the first miss, when a free-header by Meikel from Geoghans long throw-in could quite have easily found the back of the net but thankfully, went straight at Inghy who caught comfortably! Jason, tried this sort of chipped lob over the advancing keeper in a one to one during the second-half of the Dagenham game and again got it wrong. Maybe, Jason needs to think about taking the ball round keepers when in those situations or just putting his foot through the ball!! This is probably what GM is talking about when he says we need to be more ruthless and finish teams off, esp. when presented with easy chances?! COYR.
