Hair-raising end to Huntington Rovers cup tie
10:17am Friday 2nd November 2012 in Sport
THERE was last-minute drama as Huntington Rovers edged out Britannia Tadcaster 5-4 in round two of the York FA Sunday Morning Junior Cup, writes Barry Casterton.
Huntington hit back from 4-3 down to level and then scored a fifth winning goal with one minute remaining, before goalkeeper Tom Hair saved a last-gasp penalty.
The reward for Rovers is a home tie in round three against York Five Lions, who were 4-2 winners at F3.
Tadcaster Magnet made light work of their 6-0 home win over Selby Olympia thanks to two goals each from Simon Hughes and former York City junior Kingsley Wetherald, plus one apiece by John Darton and Dan Philips.
They will host Drax, 7-1 victors at Phoenix, in the next round.
York RI enjoyed an emphatic 7-2 win at Marcia Bishopthorpe.
There were two goals apiece for Daryl Bateson and Ben Hodgson, to add to strikes by Dylan Henderson, Adam Chaplin and Steve Wright.
RI will now face the winners of the delayed tie between Bubwith White Swan and LNER Builders.
Bishopthorpe United’s reward for a 7-2 triumph at Shoulder of Mutton is a trip to either Barlby or York St John University in the round.
A Lee Powell hat-trick fired Acomb Celtic to a 6-1 home victory over Station in round two of the York FA Sunday Morning Senior Cup. Celtic were drawn at home in the third round to the winners of the rearranged tie between Bubwith Nomads and Severus SC.
York Medics beat Leeman United 3-1 thanks to two goals in the first half from Greg Chambers and one from Luke Thornton.
They now await the winners of the clash between Hounds and Derwent United.
Skelton, 4-3 winners at home to Dunnington, have another home tie in round three against York Nomads Society, who ousted Hambleton 3-2.
Meanwhile, there was only one game played in the Ian’s Cars of Barlby York Sunday Morning Football League.
Division two leaders Derwent United were 5-2 winners at Marcia Grey.
United dominated the first half and were 3-0 up at the break thanks to goals from Simon Cook, Callum Scott and Damon Cox.
Marcia pulled a goal back just after the restart when Johnny Flint crashed a volley against the crossbar and then volleyed in the rebound.
But the visitors were soon 5-1 up when Marcus Godsall came off the bench to grab a brace before Steve Pickup netted Marcia’s second.
