Bowls: York's Hebden gloom lightened by Cave conquest

TWO out of three wasn’t bad for York Indoor Bowls Club as they won in Yorkshire League division one and the North Eastern League, but lost by one shot in the Hebden Trophy.

York won three rinks and finished with a 103-80 aggregate victory over promoted North Cave in the Yorkshire League.

At home, Dave Stroughair’s team had a slender 14-13 lead with seven ends to go before pulling away to win 31-14.

Paul Humphreys’ side were involved in a high-scoring game which saw them drop a seven, six and five.

However, they were in full control throughout, dropping the seven when they had a 17-3 advantage, the six when they led 24-11 and the five on the last end.

Away, Graham Brooke’s team went into the last end 20-14 ahead, only to drop a five, while Dave Attwood’s side went into their last end chasing a two to draw but dropped a single to go down 20-17.

York picked up 14 points out of 18 at stake.

The York ladies were also playing North Cave, which proved to be a nail-biting game as they trailed for most of the time only to clinch a 74-73 win at the end, picking up seven points from the ten at stake.

There was a great comeback for Barbara Dawson’s team, who trailed 13-3 and 15-8 before winning seven out of nine ends to finish with an excellent 23-18 victory.

Irene Paylor’s rink were in with a chance when they trailed 17-13 with three ends to go, but they lost the next two to go down 20-14.

Away, Pat Bracken’s side came back from 15-10 down to level at 18-18 with two ends to play. Singles on both gave them a well-deserved 20-18 success.

Joyce Gee’s team went into the last end with a 17-15 advantage only to be thwarted by a two to share the spoils.

The disappointment for the club came from the Hebden Trophy team.

The York ranks looked to be on course for a 16-2 points victory after three rinks had won against Hornsea.

However, they were stunned by Tony Bryan’s team dropping a three on the last end to go down 24-15, making the final aggregate score 73-72.

The game had been close throughout and both away rinks had come away with one-shot victories.

Jim Robertson’s team picked up a four on the last end to win 18-17 and Eric Hodgson’s dropped a single on their last end to finish with a 20-19 victory.

That was mainly thanks to a seven they had scored on the 12th end to turn a 13-7 deficit into a 14-13 lead.

Ken Robinson’s team won 19-13 despite dropping a three on their last end.
