Tyke Petroleum League shake-up on cards

York’s Tyke Petroleum Men’s Tennis League are pushing back the boundaries.

A 40-mile ‘inclusion zone’ around York is one of a number of changes on the agenda at the league’s annual general meeting at Wigginton Squash & Social Club on Thursday, November 8, at 7.30pm.

Changes to the boundaries of the eight-division competition – which already includes sides from Wetherby and Harrogate – would allow for the addition of teams from places like Leeds and Malton.

There is also a motion to retain the 12-point scoring system that was trialled by the league last season, plus a proposal to completely rewrite the competition rules. A proposed new pyramid structure could introduce a more local league at the lower levels, while other options for debate include an additional end-of-season competition.

Each member club is allowed two votes on each proposal. Meanwhile, as part of the meeting, league sponsor Derek Boorman will be awarding trophies to the eight 2012 champions.

The final delayed game of the season saw both Starbeck and Bubwith stave off the threat of relegation from division two.

Starbeck’s Jim Haddleton and Simon Iles took a maximum three points from 25 games won in a 56-52 victory over Bubwith.

As a result, Knaresborough King James were relegated along with Stamford Bridge.
