Challenge Cup knockout blow ends a miserable campaign for Heworth ARLC

Heworth ARLC brought down the curtain on a troubled campaign with a 32-6 Carnegie Challenge Cup defeat at Underbank Rangers.

The Villagers, who finished the National Conference League division two season without a win, exited the knockout competition at the preliminary round stage.

Underbank took an early lead with a try by Alex Chatterton, converted by Neil Barrett, but Heworth hit back with a 13th-minute try for Michael Brown and a 26th-minute penalty from Gary Watkinson.

The home side led 16-6 at half-time after tries by stand-off Will Midgley and full-back Sam Hendrick, with one Barrett conversion. Second-half scores were added by winger Richard Aka, Midgley and prop Sam Dalby, with Barrett goaling two.

Prop Mike Crossman starred for Heworth, as did under-18s forward Liam Braithwaite.
