YORK and New Earswick Indoor Bowls Clubs both got through their first hurdles in the Denny Cup to set up a mouth-watering derby next Saturday.
That duel will start at 10am at the clubs’ respective Thanet Road and Huntington Road head-quarters.
To advance to the second round, York beat Ryedale 104-65 on aggregate.
At Thanet Road, Dave Stroughair’s team were on top form as they only lost two of the first 16 ends to lead 34-2 before Nick Scott’s side finished by winning four of the last five to lose 36-8.
The side led by Dave Attwood only lost two of the first 12 ends and led 22-4 before Trevor Wilford’s team started to get their rewards. The game finished 30-13 to the home side.
In Norton, both home rinks were victorious with Paul Twamley’s rink winning the 18th, 19th and 20th ends to go from 21-19 down and lead 26-21 before dropping a two on the last to beat Paul Humphreys’ team 26-23.
John Best’s team triumphed 18-15 despite dropping a four on the last end to Mark Clarke’s side.
New Earswick were always in front against Leeds at crucial stages to underscore an 82-78 win.
At home, both rinks won with Paul Dawson’s turning their game round between the tenth and 12th ends where they went from 11-10 down to lead 18-11 and win 25-22.
Barry Johnson’s team lost four of the last five ends but had already done enough to secure victory, going from 19-14 to finish 20-18.
Away, Ralph Tiplady’s team were level at 15-15 with three ends to play before winning the next two.
Brian Gray’s team trailed 20-12 with four ends to play but, vitally for the aggregate score, notched a two on the 18th, then a five on the 20th end, before dropping a single on the last to lose 22-19.
