Gary Ballance can be a big hitter for Yorkshire

Joe Root has backed Gary Ballance to “go all the way”after the left-handed batsman top-scored for Yorkshire in the competition with 147 runs from six matches, including two fifties.

Ballance, 22, hit a stunning 64 not out against Trinidad & Tobago in the qualifiers and an excellent 58 in the group defeat against Chennai on Monday.

The Zimbabwe-born left-hander will travel to India with England’s Performance Programme squad next month.

“He’s got so much talent, and I can see him going all the way,” said Root.

“He hits the ball a long way and has a good head on his shoulders.

“There’s no reason why he can’t play international cricket.”
