Hockey: Bolton-bashing duo Horne and Butler team up in ladies’ triumph

LAURA HORNE and Ali Butler grabbed two goals apiece as City of York Hockey Club ladies I beat hosts Bolton 4-1 in the North League premier division.

The visitors took the lead from a short corner routine when Sam Binns found Horne on the back post and she deflected the ball into the net.

Butler then crossed the ball into the ‘D’ from the right and Horne steered the ball past the ’keeper.

Confusion in the York defence allowed Bolton to pull a goal back player of the match Emma Pledge starred on her debut to keep the hosts at bay until half-time.

Ten minutes into the second half, York struck again when Butler deflected in a shot from Binns at a penalty corner.

Butler then bagged her second goal in open play, receiving the ball in the ‘D’ before drawing the ’keeper and playing the ball into an empty net.

Meanwhile, City of York ladies II beat University of York I 3-0 in the Yorkshire League premier division.

Fiona Braidwood had a solid game in defence in a goalless first half.

After half-time, Fiona Gemmel broke the deadlock and a second goal quickly followed from a hard strike from the edge of the ‘D’ from Paula Clough.

City sealed the game with a third goal from Rachel Bassett, who lunged for the ball and flicked it into the goal.
