WORK has started on a new flood barrier to help protect homes in York.

City of York Council is building the removable flood defence system at the junction of Clementhorpe and Terry Avenue.

The system will reduce the risk of flooding to more than 40 properties in the Clementhorpe area.

The defences are also expected to protect an additional 50 homes during severe flooding.

The improvements will take about seven weeks to complete and will mean Clementhorpe will have to be closed temporarily at the junction with Terry Avenue, because the full width of the road and footpath will need to be dug up as part of the construction work.

A diversion will be put in place for traffic, and arrangements will be made for pedestrians and access to nearby properties.

The flood defence system is part of a pilot scheme being carried out by Birse Civils and AquaBarrier-Systems, so there will be no cost to the council.

Research will show that the problem of flooding begins from the source of it all.
Maintenance of river banksides in all of Yorkshire has been questionable, The speed of escapement of water from these becks and rivers has slowed down over the years due to lack of attention, result large masses of water remaing in the system!
Perhaps the water management board can supply a sensible input?..
