Historic buildings lit up for Illuminating York Festival

THIS year’s Illuminating York Festival starts tonight.

The event which is organised by the City of York Council, showcases light, sound and video artists from across the world.

The artwork will be exhibited throughout the city centre, on and inside some of York’s most familiar and historic buildings, with most of the events on the festival itinerary free.

You will be able to view Vespertine for free in the rear courtyard of King’s Manor from tonight. Meanwhile next door, in the Museum Gardens, will be the second of this year’s light artworks.

Walls Of Light offers visitors a chance to “draw” on the ancient ruins of the Multangular Tower – with official approval.

London-based firm GaiaNova, working with OMA International, has created an interactive drawing board which will let visitors see their drawings projected on to the Roman tower.

The work of professional artists will also be on display.

Finally, St Sampson’s Square will become, for three nights only, an interactive feast of colour, light and sound.

5Circles has been produced by York-based KMA and Pilot Theatre, and has been shortlisted as one of the projects for the 2012 Olympiad.
