A motorcyclist was taken to hospital with serious injuries after a crash at one of York's busiest interchanges.

Traffic tailed back for more than a mile along the A1079 Hull Road as it approached the Grimston Bar roundabout from the east following a smash just after 12.15pm yesterday.

A silver motorbike and a maroon Renault Mégane were in collision.

The Renault, driven by a woman thought to be about 50 years old, had been turning off the roundabout into the B1228 Elvington Road when the motorbike collided with its nearside wing.

Two crews from the Yorkshire Ambulance Service were called. The car driver was uninjured, but was treated for shock.

The motorcyclist suffered broken bones and was taken to York Hospital.

Traffic was affected for about an hour-and-a-half while the road was cleared.

Speaking at the scene, Traffic Constable Glenn Wilkinson said: "A vehicle has been coming out of the junction going towards Elvington down the B1228.

"A motorcyclist has been coming up Hull Road towards York and a collision has occurred," he said.

"The rider suffered serious, but not life-threatening, injuries."

Meanwhile, police are appealing for a van driver to contact them after the vehicle was involved in a collision with a cyclist, who was taken to hospital after she suffered injuries in the accident.

Police said the crash involved a 22-year-old cyclist, who was knocked from her bicycle after colliding with a white transit-style van as it was turning a corner.

The collision happened at the junction of St Leonard's Place and Duncombe Place, York, at about 8.20am yesterday.

Police said the van did not stop following the collision, but said the driver of the van may be unaware that there had been a collision.

The cyclist, who is from the Bootham area, was taken to York Hospital with arm and wrist injuries.

Anyone with information about the accident is asked to phone PC Ryan Cowling, on 0845 6060247.
