TRADING standards bosses are to continue a city-wide battle against people selling fake and bogus goods, after councillors voted against focussing on York's central market.

As reported in The Press last week, City of York Council has carried out a study into the scale and nature of counterfeit goods traders in the city.

The report revealed 22 people had been prosecuted in the last three years, with combined fines and court costs of more than £10,000.

Their crimes included selling fake DVDs online and at Rufforth car boot sale, while copies of top-label T-shirts, handbags and sunglasses have also frequently been found by trading standards officers.

The council's licensing and regulatory committee had requested the study look specifically at Newgate Market in the city centre, but officers said only one complaint had been made about that in the past 18 months.

pathetic.if you don t realise it s not a real cartier watch for 4.99 then you deserve all you get.most people want a bit of cheap bling or the chance to buy a cd/dvd for considerably less than high st prices.we re fed the old albanian mafia or crime syndicate stories when most of the dealers are one man bands from the west riding.

Why oh why do we rate payers pay for companies to protect their copyright? Surely the companies themselves should be looking for fakes? Trading standards should be ensuring product safety. We all know what a fake is no one is being fooled.

Close the car boots and markets for starters - but no, the council makes too much money from them. It's all noise and no action!

I agree with Ouserower, the public aren't being ripped off, they know what they are buying. It's all about copyright protection which the taxpayer should not be paying for.
