"The bug was imprinted on the underside of the chocolate bar"
Cameron Murray with the moth he claims was found on a Cadbury's Chocolate bar
Cameron Murray with the moth he claims was found on a Cadbury's Chocolate bar

TOP chocolate-maker Cadbury has pledged to investigate after claims a boy from Selby bit off more than he bargained for in his Dairy Milk bar.

Eleven-year-old Cameron Murray said he found a bug looking like a moth embedded in the chocolate.

Cameron, who lives at Barlby, decided he wanted a sweet treat so, after asking his mum, Sarah, he went to the fridge and picked a Dairy Milk from a Christmas selection box.

But he says he got a nasty shock - a bug imprinted on the choc bar.

The Barlby Hilltop Primary School pupil said: "I pulled back the foil and bit into the chocolate and then did the same again and saw it.

"When I saw the bug I thought I was going to be sick. I was just hoping that I had not eaten any of it."

Mum Sarah, 37, said: "I was on the phone to my mum, and he came into the room and said there was a bug in his chocolate bar.

"He started drinking loads of water. He told me he had eaten a bug and I thought he was having me on.

"But when I took the bar off him, I saw it.

"The bug was imprinted on the underside of the chocolate bar.

"It looked like a moth you would see in a display cabinet, with its wings outstretched. It is about the size of a thumbnail.

"I thought it was disgusting. It really is a bit horrible thinking bugs are in your food."

Sarah said she did not know where the chocolate came from, as the selection box was a Christmas present.

"It is a freak occurrence. It will probably never happen to us again," she said.

A spokesman for Cadbury said: "We are sorry to hear that Cameron has experienced this as it sounds unpleasant for him.

"We would ask his mother to return the bar to Cadbury as soon as possible so that we can carry out a full investigation and we will keep them fully informed."

Sarah is reporting the incident to North Yorkshire trading standards and will then return the chocolate bar to Cadbury.

Cameron said he was still looking forward to his next chocolate bar: "It has not put me off eating the stuff!"

Get a life. Bet she calls the police too if she ever finds a hair on her pizza from the takeaway.

Extra protein, she should be pleased, at least the bug added to his nutritional intake for the day.

This is nothing! The other month I was minding my own, eating a chocolate bar when I was enveloped in this foil wrappy sort of stuff. I had to live on chocolate for two months- bit of worry given the salmonella problems Cadburys have had, but there you go. Then, a week ago, some kid ripped the wrapper off me and tried to stuff me in his gob. I'm writing to Trading Standards as we speak!

Come off it, that photo is pretty disgusting. It's the sort of thing that should not happen, Cadbury's should apologise and replace the faulty product.

Honestly.....in some coutries insects are a considered a delicacy, infact I bet the protein content of the bar was increased and I doubt eating a moth is going to kill you. In fact I say more moths in choclate bars, frankly I'd rather eat a sugar coated Taratuala Hawk Wasp than eat a plain old choclate bar, you people are wimps.....

We should have more moths in chocolate bars, perhaps then there won't be so many obese people.

Drat!
Cadburys managed to steal our new "Fruit and Moth" flavour recipe and get it into Production two months before us!

its a common fact that there are parts of insects in chocolate...just that you cant see or taste them.
its not as though he ate any of the moth anyway...another person wanting her five minutes of fame.

Posted by: I once had a snail.. on 5:06pm Mon 15 Jan 07
I once found a dead frozen snail in a pack of Frozen Own Brand Supermarket Peas. I reported it to Environmental Health / Trading Standards.
Their inspector visited the supermarket head office and packing plant, had massive entertainment and jollys, and wrote me a glowing letter saying what a marvellous supplier it was, and how it was SO RARE an occurence, and would never happen again.
The letter almost made me feel lucky having a snail!

The moral of the story? Well, writing a letter is a total waste of time - GO TO THE NEWSPAPERS AND GIVE THEM THE WORST PUBLICITY POSSIBLE!!

The larvae (caterpillars) of many species of moths are used as food. They are a particularly important source of nutrition (protein, fat, vitamins and minerals) in Africa. In one country alone, Congo (Kinshaza) (formerly Zaire), more than 30 species are harvested. Some caterpillars are sold not only in the local village markets, but are shipped by the tons from one country to another. There are even processing plants where caterpillars are canned in Botswana and South Africa. In the rural countryside, they are usually dried in the sun before being sold in the market.

I haven't bought a Cadbury product since their last problem - Jan2006 (also avoiding supermarket own brand as likely to be made by Cadbury) Why does no one pick up on these ossues and boycott a brand till it goes out of business, it's the only way to bring them to heel otherwise they will continue to abuse their market position and provide the customer with second rate product

Cadburys should be complimented on embalming dead moths. Unfortunately this particular specimen nearly met a nasty end by being devoured by a sweet toothed human. One wonders, however if the packet properly list the ingredients? If not could Cadburys be sued for failing to adhere to food labelling legislation?

Excellent work Gerran. This sort of thing needs to be reported.

Clearly the most probably explanation is an Al'Qaeda plot to infiltrate the nation's chocolate supply and poison them with flesh eating moths that, once eaten, destroy the minds of the young.
Posted by: x on 5:49pm Mon 15 Jan 07
unfortunatly Moths are not mentioned in our Recommended daily allowance.
Could have been worse. at least you got your chocolate, More than most people in Africa got this Christmas!

I bet his mother doesn't let him pick his sweets up off the floor wipe them clean and eat them either.

Despite fierce competition from numerous other f*ckless stories, "The bug was imprinted on the underside of the chocolate bar" wins today's York Press' non-news news story. Votes are still being counted as to whether it will win the brace of awards by scooping "this article is only worth reading because of the amusing posts" award.

This is an alleged moth being found in a chocolate bar. It wouldn't surprise me if it was planted there, and this was just reported to the papers to get some backing for the story.
See this kind of "contamination" daily these days for the sake of a quick buck. I'm sure Cadbury's will investigate this fully - if they ever get the chocolate bar back!

This was a story about a product being sold. The product was not, it appears, up to the required standard. If you came upon this website and it said "No fees are payable", and then you were charged, you would immediately complain to trading standards. This story is of the same moral value. I would hope that manufacturers are always aware that their products need to be as described. I wonder where some of you were educated, the university of "I'll post a stupid comment?". I suppose I'll now get some replies from that university!

I think it was newsworthy, and I do not think the possibility of somebody eating contaminated food is humorous. When Cadbury allegedly sold food contaminated with some food poisoning bacteria (was it salmonella?) everybody complained that we should have been informed earlier. About time we got together and took such issues seriously. Sorry to be so determined about this but food poisoning nearly killed me 5 years ago. It is a serious subject!

Lighten up old chap. If all of the comments on here were deadly serious, they wouldn't be worth reading. I'm sure we are all shocked at the lad finding a moth in his choccy. However, for you to then post that we wouldn't be laughing so much if it was salmonella, no we wouldn't. In fact, if he had opened the wrapper to a man eating tiger, we wouldn't be laughing either. Fact is, it wasn't a tiger nor was it salmonella, it was a moth, and judging by the amount of invertebrates and insects my kids have picked up and scoffed over the years, I'm sure a moth in a chocolate bar is no big deal.

I found a spider in a load of bread once, but didn't run to the press. I took it back to the shop and asked for a replacement, minus the spider. Common sense surely? I have to admit, the bread was not as described, as no added spiders were on the ingredients list, but we live in a world of all manner of creatures, great and small. It stands to reason that one or two will find their way into our sterile world and get gobbled up for their troubles.

It's the moth I feel sorry for.

A minute's silence for our deceased moth friend please!
