YOUNG conservationists from the Mount School in York have reached the finals of the prestigious Blake Shield Awards.

The Blake Shield is awarded by the British Naturalist Association to a team aged ten to 16 for a natural history or conservation project with an emphasis on team work.

Lucy Hampshire, Elizabeth Sham, Verity Winterburn, Vivian Lei, Rachael West and Holly West are the six members of the Mount School Conservation Club to reach the finals.

The conservation area at the Quaker girls' school in York was originally established by Dr Catherine Morris 14 years ago and consisted of a butterfly garden, a pond and a woodland glade.

Over the years the area has been extended to provide habitat stacks and boxes for ladybirds, birds, bats and butterflies.

The latest development is the installation of display boards with information cards about organisms found in specific habitats within the conservation area.

The girls have been invited to attend the final at Northampton University tomorrow, where television presenter David Bellamy will present the prizes.
