Heavy snowfall and ice: safety warning to drivers

Drivers were being urged to take care today after overnight temperatures dropped causing widespread ice and frozen snow.

North Yorkshire Police has reported more than 60 road accidents across North Yorkshire overnight. Sutton Bank on the edge of the North York Moors was closed in both directions last night following an accident involving four vehicles.

Many roads including the M62, East Yorkshire, were still treacherous this morning while freezing fog made driving difficult in the Stamford Bridge area for several hours. Motorists were being advised to consider whether their journey was essential, before setting out, because of the risk of freezing fog and ice patches.

Today, the A1079 at Market Weighton was reported to be just passable with care due to snow between Arras Hill, Market Weighton and the A164, Jocks Lodge, Beverley. All lanes have been re-opened after the road was closed on Saturday evening.

Meanwhile snow ploughs have been out clearing roads, as well as usually busy shopping car parks such as at Clifton Moor.

But for families and fun-lovers, the snow has lured people to the slopes of York and North Yorkshire, where sledges, snow ball fights and snow angels have been the order of the day.

I'm now awaiting for the comments from the macho, "expert" car drivers to complain about other drivers taking to the roads with caution and to tell us what gear we should be in.

When it comes to 'what gear we should be in' I'd heartily recommend good warm clothing....oh yes, and maybe a hat.

I'd like to meet up again with the scrote who decided to impress his girlfriend by snowballing me last night as I pedalled past the Odeon during a snowstorm, with poor highway conditions. That kind of behaviour can lead to hospital beds being occupied.

No, really?! I was expecting to read something along the lines of "Detective Inspector Nick Plodder told a press conference today, 'We advise all motorists to take advantage of the weather by jumping in your souped-up BMW and wellying it up Bootham like Ayrton Senna on acid'".

Quite Paul, it's always safer to confront yobbos like this when they're not armed with a soft ball of snow and protected by a twelve year old girl.

I see the idiots are or have been on Garrowby Hill all day, dont they know it's illegal to park on Garrowby Hill itself ? on either side, and as for blocking the escape lane ! well that just beggars belief just how moronic some people are.

Shame I didnt have an out of control HGV, it would be great to have wiped out all the cars parked there.

Always best to heed Police advice in bad weather and only make journeys if they are truly essential, ignoring this advice can also lead to hospital beds being occupied...

We'd all like to meet him Paul.
Incidentally, you do realise you could have introduced yourself to him straight away don't you?

No mention of the FTR bus that crashed into a taxi on Saturday afternoon on the crossroads at Rougier street to Lendle bridge. I saw it happen and hoped there would be some news as to whether or not anybody was hurt. Was not much of an accident, but at least 2 ambulances turned up. I hope no one got hurt

For the second year running, Monks Cross shopping park has cleared all the walkways that go to and through the car park, including where they cross the cycle route... but left the cycle route blocked up with snow and ice. Just goes to show you where their priorities lie.

I believe there has also been a crash on the corner of Gillygate and Lord Mayors walk... the lamp post on the corner has been hit at the bottom and the lamp is hanging out now.
