Drivers were being urged to take care today after overnight temperatures dropped causing widespread ice and frozen snow.

North Yorkshire Police has reported more than 60 road accidents across North Yorkshire overnight. Sutton Bank on the edge of the North York Moors was closed in both directions last night following an accident involving four vehicles.

Many roads including the M62, East Yorkshire, were still treacherous this morning while freezing fog made driving difficult in the Stamford Bridge area for several hours. Motorists were being advised to consider whether their journey was essential, before setting out, because of the risk of freezing fog and ice patches.

Today, the A1079 at Market Weighton was reported to be just passable with care due to snow between Arras Hill, Market Weighton and the A164, Jocks Lodge, Beverley. All lanes have been re-opened after the road was closed on Saturday evening.

Meanwhile snow ploughs have been out clearing roads, as well as usually busy shopping car parks such as at Clifton Moor.

But for families and fun-lovers, the snow has lured people to the slopes of York and North Yorkshire, where sledges, snow ball fights and snow angels have been the order of the day.
