GRITTING teams from City of York Council have gritted the primary highway network four times so far today. They are now moving on to secondary routes and will be treating them throughout the afternoon.

However, the council is warning motorists and cyclists that it will take some time for the grit to make an impact on the compacted snow and ice.

Sally Burns, director of Communities and Neighbourhoods, City of York Council, said: “We have been gritting round the clock since 4.30am yesterday morning and the primary network is looking reasonably clear. Although we’re moving on to the secondary routes this afternoon, it will take a while for the grit to make an impact on the compacted snow and ice and with freezing temperatures expected this evening we would advise drivers to take extra care.

“I’d like to thank everyone for their help in keeping York moving and supporting more vulnerable members of the community. It’s great to see teams from across the council the independent and voluntary sector all pulling together with residents for the good of the city.”
