A CANDIDATE for the top police role in the county has taken to the streets of Selby with the town’s MP.

Julia Mulligan has been put forward as the Conservative candidate for North Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner post.

She went on patrol with Nigel Adams , the Tory MP for Selby and Ainsty, police and community support officers.

Mr Adams said: “I think it’s important for politicians to keep in touch at street level.

“It was also good to welcome Julia to Selby on the patrol. We were out until about 1am to see how North Yorkshire Police manage the night time economy in Selby. Officers I spoke to were very committed to the role in what can be challenging circumstances.”

Mr Adams and Mrs Mulligan patrolled the town, and attended callouts including to a suspected drunk driver, and an arrest for drunken behaviour in Selby town centre.

Mrs Mulligan said: “For the first half of the night I was assigned to a special constable. What ensued was mostly a typical Friday night: a mixture of aggressive behaviour fuelled by drink, teenagers milling around looking like trouble and drunk drivers.

“The night also confirmed my view that while specials are not an alternative to regulars, they are very valuable. The visible presence of police on the streets, whether specials or regulars, is essential in preventing trouble ‘kicking off’.”
