Unemployment falls in Selby

UNEMPLOYMENT has fallen again in the Selby district, latest figures have revealed.
The number of people claiming Job Seeker’s Allowance in the area fell between May and June by 77 to 1,526, or 2.8 per cent of those eligible to claim.
The figure is helped by seasonal factors, with more jobs traditionally created in the summer months, but the number is only marginally worse than the 1,496 people claiming the allowance in June last year.
The percentage is also considerably better than the figure for Yorkshire and The Humber as a whole – 4.7 per cent - and for Great Britain – 3.8 per cent.
Selby council leader Mark Crane said: “These are overall positive figures, while always recognising that for anybody that is out of work, it’s a very difficult time.
“I remain cautiously optimistic that we will continue to see unemployment in Selby below the national average, and hopefully continuing to fall.”
The number of claimants across North Yorkshire as a whole fell by 535 to 8,898 in June, or 2.4 per cent of those eligible, compared with 8,649 in June last year.
