A MAN was arrested after a fight outside a nightclub in which a 33-year-old local man was wounded.

Police were called to the Main Street club, part of the New Inn in Gowthorpe, Selby, just after midnight yesterday following reports of a large disturbance involving about ten people at the premises.

On arrival, they found a 33-year-old man with a large cut to his face and called paramedics to take him to hospital.

A 22-year-old local man was arrested at the scene, and was in police custody at the time of going to press. Yorkshire Ambulance Service said they were called to the scene just after midnight by the police, and took the victim to York Hospital, where he received 15 stitches to his face before being discharged.

A police spokesman said it was unclear whether the fight had started in the alleyway between the club and the street, or in Gowthorpe, but said there had been no other arrests in connection with the fight, and nobody else was injured.

Officers were still searching the area yesterday, and a spokesman said they would check CCTV from the venue, but appealed to anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward with information.

Detective Sergeant Fiona Wynne, of York CID, said: “A man has suffered a fairly serious facial wound in this incident and I am appealing to anyone who can help the investigation to get in touch. If you saw the incident itself or have any other information that can help the investigation, please contact the police or Crimestoppers as soon as possible.”
