New technical school proposal moves forward

PLANS for a new technical school to serve North and East Yorkshire have moved a step closer to reality.

Goole High head teacher Danuta Tomasz and associate head teacher David Flowitt will travel down as part of a team to London to the Department for Education, after they were selected for an interview, following their application to create a studio school in the area.

As The Press reported in February, the multimillion-pound Studio School partnership venture between Goole High School and Selby College would provide a technical education for teenagers, and could open in September 2013 at Goole High if plans get the go-ahead.

It would enable students to take qualifications that lead directly to employment or further training and employment.

Jennifer Robson, from the university technical colleges and studio schools division at the Department for Education, said in a letter: “As we explained when we confirmed receipt of your application, we will be inviting the strongest applications to interviews to inform our assessment process. We have now finished the initial assessment and are pleased to invite you to attend an interview.”

The interview panel will comprise of senior policy officials from the Department for Education’s Studio School division and advisors on education, finance and premises, as well as a member of the Studio Schools Trust.

It is expected to last 90 minutes with the interview panel aiming to get a clear sense of what the Create Studio School Goole wants to achieve and the demand for the school in the area.

Mr Flowitt said: “This is fantastic news for the bid and keeps the Studio School on track for opening in September 2013.

“I would like to say a huge thank you to all of the organisations that have supported with the bidding process so far, as without the support of all involved we would not have progressed through to this exciting next phase.”
