AN 18-year-old woman was assaulted in Selby as she walked through the town late at night.
The local woman was alone in the town between 12.30am and 12.45am yesterday, when she passed a man walking in the opposite direction in an alleyway between Abbot’s Mews and Abbot’s Road.
As she turned into Abbot’s Road and headed towards Selby College, the woman realised the man had changed direction and begun to follow her, then she heard running footsteps before something was pulled over her head to obscure her vision, police believe.
A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said the woman screamed loudly and managed to get away from her attacker following a brief struggle, then ran to a nearby address and phoned the police.
The suspect was described as a white man, aged 16 or 17, and between 5ft 6ins and 5ft 8ins, thin with short blond hair, which was shaved at the sides.
At the time of the incident he was wearing a light-grey hooded top, with a light-coloured T-shirt underneath.
Detective Constable Cheryl Quinn, of Selby CID, said: “Thankfully the woman was not injured as a result of this shocking incident.
“However, she has naturally been left very shaken by the experience.”
Anyone with information should contact Selby CID on 101, press option 2 and ask for Cheryl Quinn, or phone Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111, quoting reference 12120068898.
