Lotto cash up for grabs

VILLAGERS in the Selby area have been urged to apply for Big Lottery funding to help build and improve their communities.

The Village SOS scheme is open to all villages or hamlets with fewer than 3,000 residents, and communities can apply for grants of between £10,000 and £50,000.

But despite Village SOS being open to the majority of villages in the Selby district, none has so far registered with the scheme, and communities could miss out on vital cash to pay for new enterprises or building work.

Local councillors have urged residents to speak to their Community Engagement Forums about potential projects that deserve support.

Councillor Chris Metcalfe, Selby District Council’s lead executive member for communities, said: “Village SOS is an ideal opportunity for our communities to take the first step in helping themselves to rekindle the community spirit of old.”

Councillor Steve Shaw-Wright said: “Village SOS is possibly the catalyst for change within the smaller communities in Selby district.”
