Moves to safeguard Sherburn-in-Elmet swimming pool
8:44am Tuesday 24th April 2012 in Selby & Tadcaster
TALKS have been held to try to safeguard the future of a North Yorkshire school swimming pool, which has been threatened with closure.
Chris Lewis, chair of governors at Sherburn High School in Sherburn-in-Elmet, said members of the community and representatives of the school governing body had met to develop plans.
He said the community action group they had set up had applied for funding for a feasibility study into community use of the pool and possible further development of leisure facilities on the site.
He said the group was also working with Selby District Council, and Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, which runs the council’s leisure facilities, and he said North Yorkshire County Council had offered officer support.
The county council withdrew funding from the pool last year but more than 1,000 local residents signed a petition to keep it open.
