A TRADITIONAL village shop restored to a community by a farming couple has celebrated its first year of trading.
In 2010, the village of Colton, near Tadcaster, which has about 50 houses and just over 100 occupants, had lost its shop, mobile post office and mobile library.
So cattle farmers Andrew and Angela Kay took the opportunity to reintroduce the traditional village shop. They invested in their existing farm shop to provide a wider range of goods.
Through the shop, using the redundant village phone box, the community has also set up a book club following the closure of the mobile library.
Andrew said: “Although Colton is a very small village it has a strong sense of community but a lack of facilities.
“This is a place where people are welcome to stop and natter and catch up on village news.”
