Van containing explosives stolen near Selby

THIEVES have stolen a van containing explosive devices from a village near Selby.

The van was stolen from Lunnfields Lane, close to the A1(M) near Burton Salmon. It contained 16 railway detonators, explosive devices used to warn railway engineers of oncoming trains.

A police spokesman said the Ford Transit van, which belonged to a railway contractor, was stolen from the site between 12.35pm and 12.45pm last Thursday. The drop-sided van, registration NA11ONR, has a black body with a white cab and signage reading Kelly Integrated Transport Services, and a police spokesman said two bags containing the 16 foghorn detonators for use on railway lines were in the cab of the vehicle.

The detonators are yellow, approximately 5cm long and attached to two lead straps, and are used by railway engineers to warn train drivers of accidents or incidents on the track ahead, or as a warning signal in dense fog.

PC Dave Clark said: “We do not believe that the thieves knew the detonators were in the vehicle at the time and may have since dumped them somewhere. The stolen detonators do not pose a risk if they are handled correctly. However, despite their small size, if they are misused they may cause a serious injury.”

There is no such thing as a drop-side van, such vehicles are pickups

Never mind the fact that explosives have been stolen you have to comment on the van!

Trust me, as well as not knowing the correct name for a Transit Pick up we are fotunate at the moment that the police in Selby did not turn up armed to arrest the vehicles driver for only securing the exposives in a locked steel container. Luckily they haven't thought of it as it's a far easier use of a shift than checking out the sort of places occupied by persons of non permenant residence where there is a history of this exact type of vehicle being stripped for parts.

They aren't proper detonators. They are just small explosives that are used as sounders to train drivers.

Also they are not used by Railway 'Engineers'. They are used by anyone who goes trackside.

The article doesn't say anything about taking detonators home.
The vehicle was stolen on Thursday lunchtime from a road which is next to the railway. It's just possible the owner was at work (a pastime alien to many contributers to this site)
I don't know of a single member of the armed forces who doesn't have a few "souvenirs" at home. I'm sure coppers are the same.

I worked on the railway and as another commentator has said, they are just small explosives that are put on the track so if a train runs over them they sound alerting the driver to danger. They are quite safe unless someone does something really really really stupid with them.
