PUNK poets, post-punk musicians and stand-up comedians are among the latest performers to visit Selby.

The spring season of live events at Selby Town Hall has been launched by the town council, and also includes folk and Britpop musicians, live theatre performances, and Q&A sessions with writers and playwrights.

Among those visiting the town are iconic performanace poet - and self proclaimed 'Bard of Salford' - John Cooper Clarke, who will perform in July, and alternative comedian Alexei Sayle who will read extracts from his autobiographies and short stories, as well as answering questions from the audience.

The season opens on February 14 with Bonnie Dobson, who was a star of the 1960s New York Greenwich Village folk scene, and rated by Time Magazine as one of America’s top three female stars, and is playing music from her first new album in 40 years.

BBC folk and comedy stalwart Mike Harding will presenting a show of poetry featuring work from his four anthologies, and multi-award winning playwright John Godber will lead an evening of readings, questions and conversation with three other writers whose works are inspired by Northern England.

Other artists confirmed to play the Town Hall include Yes guitarist Steve Howe, 80s stage, screen and pop star Toyah Willcox - who will perform an intimate, career-spanning acoustic show - and former La’s bassist and Cast frontman John Power.

Chris Jones, Town Council Arts Officer, said: "Our spring season brings stars from the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and 21st century, with shows that cover blues to Britpop, poetry to plays and everything in-between.

"I’m really thrilled to have secured so many acts who are more often seen in spaces far bigger than Selby Town Hall. It’s the intimacy of the performances here which really makes them so special – the chance to enjoy acts like Cara Dillon, John Cooper Clarke, Toyah and Alexei Sayle in a venue where you can see the whites of their eyes is pretty exciting!"

Stand-up comedian and Mock The Week regular Gary Delaney will also perform at the Town Hall, as will Tom Stade, who has appeared on Live At The Appollo.

Tickets are available now, and can be purchased at the town hall, by phoning 01757 708449 or at selbytownhall.co.uk where the full line-up can be seen.
