TWO men were arrested following a chase involving firearms officers, a police helicopter and police dogs.

The men were seen in a silver Ford car in Canal Road, Selby, at about 4.15am on Tuesday, and patrolling police officers tried to pull them over.

However, the vehicle sped away from officers, starting a chase which left North Yorkshire and headed into Humberside.

The police helicopter was also called from West Yorkshire to help North Yorkshire's Road Policing Group track the vehicle, which led officers to Tottering Lane in Wressle, near Hemingbrough, where it stopped and two men ran into a field.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said the armed officers were on patrol close to the incident, and had not been called due to concerns about weapons, and thermal imaging from the helicopter helped locate the men before they made it more than 150 yards from the vehicle.

The spokesman said a 23-year-old man from Market Weighton and a 22-year-old man from Goole were arrested at 4.45am on suspicion of drink driving, dangerous driving, and failing to stop.

He said the 22-year-old man was breathalysed and blew 89mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath, more than twice the legal drink drive limit.

Both remain in custody.
