AN ELDERLY motorist escaped major injuries when a collision caused his car to overturn in a Selby village.

The 82-year-old man was in a silver Toyota Urban Cruiser in York Road, Riccall, at about 2.40pm on Thursday, which was in collision with a blue Volkswagen Polo.

A North Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said the man lived nearby and was helped to his home before paramedics arrived at the scene, but was not believed to have been seriously injured. The driver of the Polo was not thought to be injured.

The road was blocked for more than two hours before the damaged vehicle - which police said was thought to be parked - was recovered, and local bus routes were diverted until the road was cleared at about 4pm.

Tom Metcalfe heard the crash and helped divert traffic before police arrived.

He said: "I heard what I thought was a builder's skip being dropped off, a loud metal noise.

"Before the ambulance service arrived a workman and another guy managed to get him out of the vehicle and seemed to be walking him back towards his house. He seemed to be shaken and bruised."

A spokeswoman for Yorkshire Ambulance Service said nobody had been taken to hospital following the incident.
