MAJOR renovation work will be carried out on a North Yorkshire road, following outcry from the public.

A petition was set up to demand North Yorkshire County Council carry out major repairs to the surface of the Selby Bypass.

The bypass was only completed ten years ago, but is covered with potholes and bumps, which some claim have damaged their vehicles, but which also makes for unpleasant journeys, with 1,015 people agreeing that something needs to be done.

The petition was set up by Nigel Adams, MP for Selby and Ainsty, who said he had received confirmation that the work would go ahead in March.

Mr Adams said: "North Yorkshire County Council has agreed to do substantive and major repair works in the spring. They will do some temporary works to make sure it's okay over the winter, and have agreed they will carry out major repair works from the spring so it's been a great result.

"The council acknowledged that the petition raised awareness of the concern in Selby about it, so I'm absolutely delighted. It looks as if at long last people power has paid off and we're going to see some proper action on the bypass but I won't stop campaigning until the work is done."

When he organised the petition, Mr Adams called the state of the road surface "unacceptable", and said "for it to deteriorate so badly, so soon after it was opened raises questions about whether it was laid properly in the first place".

North Yorkshire County Council said it was "very aware of local feeling about the condition of the Selby by-pass", and was negotiating with the Highways Agency, which was responsible for the construction of the bypass.

Councillor Gareth Dadd said: "We are aware that there has been significant public concern about the state of the Selby bypass and the nature and extent of the roadworks carried out so far and we share their frustrations.

"Investigations reveal that there are fundamental problems with the road structure and we are progressing in our discussions with the Highways Agency, but no conclusion has yet been reached. We remain confident that through negotiations with the Highways Agency this major work may be achieved without cost to the council and ultimately the county taxpayer."
