APPRENTICES are helping to create the new Selby leisure centre.

Oliver Whitehead, apprentice electrician, and James Riley, apprentice plumber, are working on the project, which is due to be completed early next year, and are employed by mechanical and electrical subcontractor AF Connell and with construction company Wates.

Councillor Gillian Ivey, deputy leader of Selby District Council, said: "We hope this will be the first of many opportunities for young people. On-the-job training is so valuable for young people and allows them to move on to long-term good-quality careers. Selby District Council will do everything it can to help young people be more employable."

The new leisure centre, on the site of the former Abbey Leisure Centre which burned down, and will include a larger gym, health and fitness suite, multi-purpose activity hall, fitness studio, an all-weather sports pitch, sauna and steam room. There will be two swimming pools - a training pool and a six-lane 25m pool.
