PUPILS at Monk Fryston CE Primary School are marking Black History month by learning about the first black professional footballer to play in an FA Cup final.
Children were visited yesterday by Paul Eubanks, who writes Jamaican poetry but has received funding from the Professional Footballers’ Association to educate children about the black footballer Albert Johanneson who played in the FA Cup Final for Leeds Utd against Liverpool in 1965.
Headteacher Rick Weights said: “It is very important that we teach our children about the events and cultural influences that have shaped the world they are growing up in. Football is a popular medium for grabbing children’s attention, and I hope that this visit will inspire them to learn more about history.” Mr Eubanks is a former primary-school teacher and expert on Albert Johanneson, and is currently writing a book on the star about his time during 1960’s Leeds.
