THE FOURTH annual Selby Jobs Fair will be held today, with a special bus fare available to jobseekers.

Forty-five businesses and employers will be at the event, at Selby College, with about 1,000 jobseekers expected to attend for help and information on jobs and training available around the region.

About 434 jobs will be on offer in Selby, Sherburn, Tadcaster and York, and bus operator Arriva have a special £1 fare from Selby town centre to the college for jobseekers.

Nigel Adams, MP for Selby and Ainsty, set up the first event in 2010, and said this year would see opportunities for employment from companies including Hiscox in York, Ultima Kitchens - for their new £10m factory in Sherburn - and Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, who will be recruiting for the new Selby Leisure Centre.

Mr Adams said: "This is the fourth Selby district Jobs Fair and is part of my commitment that I will do all that I can to bring more jobs to our area and improve employment prospects for everybody in Selby district. Unemployment has reduced by nearly 50 per cent over the last four years in Selby district, but the hard work must continue, with the objective of reducing unemployment even further.

"This jobs fair is a very important event and I hope that it is helpful. This year's event has attracted a wide range of employers from small local companies through to major national and international organisations. The range of opportunities is enormous."

Mr Adams said there would be more than 50 apprenticeships on offer, with employers available to speak to at the event, along with career guidance and CV writing advice workshops also available.
