A PETITION to improve a major North Yorkshire road has already had hundreds of signatures.

Nigel Adams, MP for Selby and Ainsty, set up the online petition to repair the surface of the Selby Bypass on Wednesday, and within 36 hours, more than 250 people had added their names to it.

Mr Adams said he hoped the petition could gain enough momentum to force North Yorkshire County Council and other partners involved in the creation and maintenance of the bypass –which was only completed ten years ago – to get together and arrange a solution to the holes and bumps in the current surface.

He said: “The state of the road surface is unacceptable and for it to deteriorate so badl, so soon after it was opened raises questions about whether it was laid properly in the first place.

“I am calling on the Highways Agency, North Yorkshire County Council and the original surface contractors to urgently get together and come up with a long-term solution, not a short-term fix for the bypass.

“I have spoken with Councillor Gareth Dadd, who is the executive member for Highways at North Yorkshire County Council and I know he is very much aware of the problem, but it is now time for action.

“Local taxpayers and motorists deserve better.”

The problems with the bypass’ surface has been raised before by Mr Adams, and by motorists, many of whom have already signed up to the petition, and some of whom have left comments.

One said: “It’s a nightmare driving on it for all the pot holes.

“I’ve started going back through town to avoid it.”

Another said: “It’s a disgrace especially for motorcyclists ... this road surface is a death trap.”

A spokesman for North Yorkshire County Council said they were aware of the petition and would respond once it was presented to them.
