ONLY the quick actions of firefighters saved a church roof from devastating destruction, their bosses have said.
Fire broke out in the roof void at St Mary's in Gowthorpe, Selby, on Friday morning.
A spokesman for North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "On their arrival crews worked hard to find the fire, which was in the roof void. Once the fire had been located, two firefighters in breathing apparatus used a hose reel jet to extinguish the fire.
"The quick action and hard work of the crews to locate and tackle the fire limited the fire damage and has saved the roof of the church."
The firefighters ventilated the building and a structural engineer was called. The spokesman said the fire was believed to have been caused by a light touching a wooden beam. Two fire engines from Selby, one from Huntington and an aerial ladder platform were called.
