RAIL links for the HS2 scheme in North Yorkshire should be altered to reduce their impact on local communities, one of the region’s councils has said.
North Yorkshire County Council’s executive will this week discuss its response to a consultation on the high-speed rail project, which would see the route linked to the East Coast main line south of York through a spur near Church Fenton and Ulleskelf.
A report on the issue by transport officials said the current preferred HS2 route north of Leeds and the proposed spur would “have a significant impact on the local community, especially visually”.
The report said: “We believe the route should be modified and that everything is done to ensure there is the minimum negative impact on communities in North Yorkshire.”
It said the council was also concerned that the distance and time between the current Leeds station and a proposed new station in the city would affect HS2 connections to North Yorkshire, and it wanted to see “continued investment” in the East Coast main line and some HS2 trains stopping at Northallerton.
