HUNDREDS of jobs have been made available to the public at events in York and Selby this week.

The third annual Selby Jobs Fair which was organised by Nigel Adams, MP for Selby and Ainsty is being held at Selby College today with more than 500 job opportunities on offer.

Employers at the event which runs between 10am and 3pm have also pledged 2,000 more jobs to be made available within the next two years.

On Tuesday about 1,500 people visited the York Jobs Fair at the Barbican, which had been organised by City of York Council, Learning City York, Job Centre Plus and York Learning.

The event offered employment advice, and stalls from local companies looking for staff, with TK Maxx filling all their Christmas vacancies on the day.

Councillor James Alexander, council leader, said: “Today signified another highly encouraging step for the cities jobseekers and residents to improve their skills and qualifications, and shows the hard work we at the council are doing to instigate further economic growth and create jobs for the people of York.

“The attendance figure today proves that unemployment is still an issue for us. We accept this, however today more than anything is an example of how we are making positive steps forward for this city.”
