THIS was the scene when a light aircraft made a crash landing in a field near Selby.

Humberside Fire & Rescue Service were called to the accident in Street Lane, Bubwith, at about 1.40pm on Saturday, after the single seater plane carried out a landing in the field.

Photographer and aeroplane enthusiast Mike Hatfield was working at a nearby football match when he heard the plane pass overhead, and took these photographs on Sunday.

He said: “I thought it sounded a bit funny, for that type of plane. It went very quiet, so I didn’t know whether it just cut out and kept going or not.

“The next thing, police, paramedics and fire engines went past.

“It looked like it landed upside down, as the canopy was smashed. It was pretty close to the pylon too.

“If the ground had been firmer, I think it would have gone straight on into it.”

Nearby Breighton Airfield said yesterday they would not comment on whether the pilot, who was uninjured in the incident, had taken off from, or was due to land at the airstrip.
