PLANS for a huge £300 million Selby development have been opposed by another of the town’s major firms.

The Press reported earlier this year that proposals for the first phase of the Olympia Park scheme, on land owned by animal feed manufacturer BOCM PAULS, had drawn objections from neighbouring logistics company the Potter Group over access.

Now Clipper Logistics Group, which leases a 300,000sq ft warehouse from the Potter Group near the Barlby Road site, has also opposed the scheme, saying it could hit its business and threaten jobs. Olympia Park is intended to include 1,000 new homes on a 92-hectare site between Barlby Road and the Selby bypass and could create 2,500 jobs. BOCM’s application for the section of the land it owns includes 985 homes, sports pitches, a community building, a pub/restaurant, a primary school and a retail unit, as well as a railway bridge and link road.

If planning permission is granted, work would start next year and Selby District Council said in May that it was looking to fast-track the application. BOCM has also applied to modernise its existing mill complex. In a letter to the council, Nigel Hinds, the Clipper Logistics operations director, said its Selby warehouse was one of its largest and was crucial to its operation, employing about 200 staff plus more than 100 seasonal workers and handling all clothing for Tesco’s online retail service as well as catering for other businesses.

The objection letter says: “The residential element of the scheme proposes properties and a school immediately adjacent to the site and this raises the possibility of a direct conflict between commercial, residential and school traffic.”
