RESIDENTS have objected to plans for a new retail park in Selby.

Plans have been submitted to Selby District Council to build a new Lidl supermarket, a drive-in KFC and a Marston's pub, along with car parking for all three locations vehicles, on land at Bawtry Road, as part of the Staynor Hall development.

Outline permission for the land was granted in 2005, but the plans for the development were only submitted in recent weeks.

Brayton Parish Council said they had considered the application and had no objections, "providing neighbours are fully consulted", while a number of residents have also supported the development.

However, many residents and local businesses have criticised the plans and objected to the development, including Selby Livestock Mart, which said traffic at the Bawtry Road location was already "of increasing congestion and risk taking", and "considerably over faced at peak periods", with the likelihood this would become worse should the development go ahead.

Local resident Paul Brice said in his objection: "Why do we need another retail park at this end of the town? Have you not considered filling the empty places in the business park where it won't affect residential communities.

"Surely these businesses could be encouraged to fill empty units in the centre of Selby where it would be more central for everybody in Selby.

"I am sure the space could be used much better to serve Staynor Hall community with Football Pitches, Tennis Courts and a Community Centre. Not a Retail Outlet."

An objection from Mr and Mrs Telford of Ash Way said they feared the changes could affect local property prices.

Their statement said: "Due to the fast food outlet it is inevitable that there will be increased litter and noise at unsociable hours which could potentially devalue the properties backing onto the site or make them more difficult to sell. It will become a meeting place for 'boy racers'.

"We have invested heavily in the property and planned to live here for a number of years, however we are now concerned that what was our 'dream home' will turn into a nightmare that we won't be able to sell."

A decision is due on the plans in June.
