New blog gets Pickering’s message on the web

THE team behind the new Pickering Town blog has organised a social media surgery to show people to use the web to its full potential.

Taking place tomorrow (Thursday), 7pm-9pm at the White Swan Inn, it gives individuals, local businesses, voluntary groups and charities the chance to learn how to get their message across.

The Pickering Blog has been set up by Gareth Jenkins, to join blogs covering Helmsley and Pickering.

Gareth put the rapid growth in town websites down to new technologies: He said: “It’s so easy now using your phone to take great photos, record videos and audio interviews and these can all be instantly uploaded on to blogging websites. Even people with little technical knowledge can now produce interesting and relevant community news stories.”

Gareth said he hoped next week’s surgery will be the first of a regular event where ‘social media surgeons’ can share what they know in a relaxed, informal and non-teccie way.

“Even if you are already blogging, tweeting and sharing online do come and join in the chat – there’s always something new to learn and to share,” he added.

Marion Buchanan, owner of the White Swan Inn and sponsors of the Pickering Town Blog, said she was delighted to host the evening: “Free technologies such as Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, YouTube and blogs can help everyone reach a wider audience via the internet, whatever your interest. I’m beginning to get my head around it all but know there’s lots more to learn. I’ll definitely be leaving a space in my diary to come along.”
