Grief of bereavement led to widow’s overdose

A GRIEVING widow who failed to come to terms with the loss of her husband of 45 years, killed herself, an inquest in Scarborough was told this week.

North Yorkshire East coroner Michael Oakley recorded the verdict on Rosemary Wilstrop, 67, of Low Street, Lastingham, who was found unresponsive at home on February 27 and later pronounced dead.

Her brother, John Hainsworth, said Mrs Wilstrop had been distressed and anxious following the death of her husband, Trevor, from cancer, last November.

“She suffered greatly from the bereavement,” he added.

However, Mrs Wilstrop had never threatened to take her life, said Mr Hainsworth. “We had hoped that she would cope. Her death was a great shock,” he said.

Recording a verdict that Mrs Wilstrop killed herself, the coroner said the retired secretary had taken an overdose of drugs prescribed for her husband.
