SWINTON and District Excelsior Band has been chosen to take part in a unique version of the Olympic relay.
Inspired by London 2012, a musical version of the torch going around the country, with five different coloured batons being passed between brass bands called Brass The Baton. To go with each different coloured baton, there has also been a piece of music written, with the five pieces played together for the first time in July.
Swinton and District Excelsior Band has been allocated the black baton along with its music, called Going The Distance.
Tracey Popham, band secretary, said they had decided to play the piece for the first time publicly during the Malton Food Lovers Festival.
“The music has been written so musicians of all levels can take part so the Swinton training band will be joining together with the main band for this performance,” she said.
“We felt it was something different.
It would be great if there are any other brass musicians or percussionists out there that would like to join in this Olympic event.”
The band plays the food festival on Sunday, May 20, 1.30pm- 3.30pm, with Going The Distance being performed at about 2.30pm.
Anyone who is interested in joining the band for this event should phone Tracey on 01653 696417.
