PLANS to build a new children’s nursery in a North Yorkshire village are set to be turned down.

Puddleducks Day Nursery wants to build a two-storey nursery in Alan Farnaby Way, in the Sheriff Hutton industrial park, to be run by a qualified local teacher, Sarah Kelly.

It would look after children up to the age of five, and provide afterschool care for under-11s from the local primary school.

The plans were supported by the parish council, and the head teacher of Sheriff Hutton Primary School, but a report to go before Ryedale District Council has recommended they be refused.

Environmental health officers raised concerns about the site location, and its closeness to furniture workshops and manufacturing sites, and a local resident also recorded concerns. The report said the proposed nursery had “the potential to create complaints relating to adjoining operators”, which could hamper development and growth of the neighbouring business.

It said council officials feared the development of a nursery could unduly restrict what could be done on the industrial estate in other units. Case officer Alan Hunter said in his report: “The unit chosen is within the centre of the site and surrounded on all sides by other units which makes the likelihood of complaints much greater than a unit sited on the edge of the industrial estate.”

The planning committee meets at 6pm in Ryedale House, Malton, tonight.
