A TEENAGER is undertaking a 24-hour gameathon to raise money for Ryedale Special Families (RSF), which needs funds for a new headquarters.

Charlie Ridgewell will play video games for 24 hours from 9am on Saturday, to 9am the next day.

The 19-year-old was born three months premature and required surgery at 36-hours-old.

He has epilepsy and arthritis in his hands, wrists, elbows and knees. He also has a heart-rate problem and blood pressure issues.

He said: “With my health issues, the chances of me achieving an ‘actual’ marathon are very slim and would probably put me halfway to a heart attack.

“It might sound easy at first, but when you think of gaming for 24 hours solid, it will be a challenge.”

Charlie, who lives in Kirby Misperton, said RSF offered him and his parents support from a young age.

He said: “I am 19 and the support for me has only grown bigger and better over the years. I think that since they have given so much well-needed assistance that it was time to give something back.

“They’ve seen me at my highest and lowest, and have always been there when I’ve pressed the crisis button, both in helping me pick myself up and giving my parents a well needed break.

“I can only speak for myself, but I’m certain there is more untold stories from people like me.

“Ryedale Special Families have been priceless for me, but also for my mum and dad. They look after us all.”

RSF was set up in the early 1990s by a group of parents. It has grown and grown and is currently fundraising for its £100,000 “Get A Move On” campaign to fund a new headquarters.

Charlie is streaming the gameathon on his YouTube channel. He has set up a schedule and although he hasn’t confirmed which games he will be playing, he is considering a different one every hour. When he needs a break, he says his dad Matthew will step in.

He added: “Whoever you are, I really can’t exaggerate how much any donation can help. If you relate, or are just an avid gamer like me, please help me get through a LONG 24 hours and RSF find a new home.”
