SENIOR and junior members of Kirkbymoorside Brass Band recently took part in the Easingwold March and Hymn Competition.

Run by the local Lions for the Yorkshire and Humber Brass Band Association, the competition saw bands from across Yorkshire competing for prizes, including deportment, best march and best hymn.

The adjudicator John Roberts was incredibly impressed with the talent on show and the local youngsters from the Kirkbymoorside Junior Band dazzled with their marching, beating of all the adult competition and winning the deportment prize for the best marching on the day.

While the senior band are well seasoned competitors, representing the town and country in competitions across the country, this was the first such competition for the Junior Band who had to march through torrential rain to a packed crowd.

Conductor Jeanette Kendall said she was rightly proud of their achievements. “We have been practising marching for a few months now, it is really difficult to play and march in time and in straight lines and in torrential rain. I couldn’t be prouder of the youngsters, they played so well and held their nerve,” she said.

Jeanette herself is the principal cornet player of Kirkbymoorside Senior Band and won the coveted outstanding instrumentalist award for her virtuoso playing on the cornet.
