A CYCLING event has been given a boost with a grant from the North York Moors National Park Authority.

More than £7,000 has been donated by the authority’s local distinctiveness and tourism scheme to help re-establish the Ryedale Rumble as an annual event on the cycling calendar.

The money will be used towards medical support for participants of the event on Sunday, July 29, and a promotional campaign.

Now being run by Friends of Ryedale School, this year’s event has three routes starting and finishing at the school.

Lizzie Coutts, event director, said they were grateful for the grant which would enable cyclists from near and far to know about the Ryedale Rumble and help the Friends of Ryedale School raise money for a very worthwhile charity.

“As a school we feel privileged to be reviving one of the UK’s most popular cycling sportives,” she said.

“It is a superb physical challenge for riders of all abilities, on routes across the stunning North Yorkshire countryside, while raising funds to help Ryedale’s future generation - it’s a winning combination.”

The routes will be well signposted, with feed stations and all finishers will be awarded a commemorative mug.

Sir Gary Verity, of Welcome to Yorkshire, who has shown his support, said: “It’s fantastic that the Ryedale Rumble is making its return and raising money for a great cause. Whatever your ability, the three routes will provide a stern yet highly rewarding challenge and they take place on some of our county’s most picturesque roads.”

“Cycling is booming across Yorkshire and I’d very much encourage people to give it a go.”
