A NEW scheme is soon to be launched to provide young homeless people in Ryedale with somewhere to live.

The Supported Lodgings Scheme has been set up by youth homelessness charity SASH but urgently needs volunteers to help roll out the new service.

The scheme, for vulnerable people aged 16-25, will offer longer-term support for those who are homeless and need a safe place to stay while also developing the skills needed to live independently.

SASH already helps youngsters in Ryedale through its emergency accommodation project Nightstop.

Sarah Ware, community coordinator for SASH said: "The best place for homeless young people is in ordinary homes, where they can get the help and support they need.

"We now urgently need Supported Lodgings hosts to offer a room and work with the SASH Support Workers to prepare young people to live independently."

Sarah said that volunteers are fully vetted, trained and supported and receive expenses to cover the costs of volunteering.

She said: "There are no special skills required to get involved, you just need a spare room and a willingness to help vulnerable young people at a difficult time."

Josie Downs and Glyn Wild, who live near Malton, have been SASH Nightstop hosts since 2012 and have so far helped 21 young people.

Glyn said that being a Nightstop host has made him more aware of the hidden problem of youth homelessness.

He said: "We were aware of homelessness issues already but didn't realise how quickly it could happen and with young people it's more hidden.

"Being hosts is just so rewarding and without SASH we think some of those who've stayed with us might have had to sleep rough."

Sarah Ware will be holding a drop in session at the Talbot Hotel, Malton on Tuesday, May 26 between 10.30am-3.30pm for anyone who is interested in volunteering with SASH. Email Sarah in advance on sarah.ware@sash-uk.org.uk or text 07507 595240.
